Ovation’s founder, Gary McCormick, began his hi-fi career at Douglas Sound in Ann Arbor, MI in 1973. In 1975, He formed HiFi Buys in Muncie, Indiana. HiFi Buys expanded into Indianapolis in 1976 and eventually grew into a thirteen-store chain. In 1986, Gary decided to continue to pursue his love of quality consumer electronics with a new venture – Ovation. When Ovation began in business in 1986, life was simple – people bought high-performance audio, the gear was loaded into their vehicles and off they went. Very few video products were sold and there was rarely a need to deliver the equipment to the customer. The company name was Ovation Audio Video Specialists and its slogan was “When you’re looking for something better”. More high-quality audio and video product has been sold by the combination of HiFi Buys and Ovation over the last thirty four years than by anyone else in central Indiana.

From the late 80’s through the 90’s and today, Ovation has always been at the forefront of new technologies. Big-screen televisions became more common and the audio manufacturers were able to bring technology into the home that was originally developed for movie theaters, Dolby Surround being the most prominent. This led to the creation of the term “home theater” and resulted in a boom in the popularity of high-quality home audio and video which continues to this day. Ovation also introduced a long list of other new technologies to the Indianapolis market including HDTV, small dish satellite systems, THX audio, and Blu-ray disc players. During this time, Ovation was named one of the top ten retailers in the country by Audio/Video International magazine for eight consecutive years (HiFi Buys also won this award eight consecutive times in prior years).

At the same time a new business was developing, the professional design and installation of multi-room audio, video and control systems for home entertainment. Designing and installing these systems with the technology available at the time required extensive expertise, which Ovation maintains to this day. New technologies, especially in the area of wireless solutions, have made multi-room audio/video and control systems much more sophisticated, afford­able and reliable. Ovation now offers a range of solutions for existing homes and remodeling projects as well as new home construction.

Ovation also serves the commercial market, providing audio, video and control solutions for restaurants, bars, offices, conference rooms and more. Most recently, Ovation has expanded into video security and energy management "green" solutions for homes and businesses of all sizes.
