Satellite/Subwoofer Speaker Systems
The trend in speaker design is smaller size. People want to be able to enjoy great sound in their homes, but without the clutter that is normally associated with audio speakers. That makes sense. After all, it’s what comes out of the speaker that’s important, not the speaker itself, right? But speakers are large for a reason. A large speaker can accommodate a large woofer, the part of the speaker that reproduces deep bass tones. These are the sounds that you feel as much as hear. Without them, music and movie soundtracks lose much of their liveliness and energy. And that’s not what we’re looking for, right?.
Some acoustic magic
So far, this is what we know:
Big speakers = Big bass
Small speakers = Weak bass
But speaker designers have a little trick up their sleeves. It seems that the human ear has trouble localizing the deepest bass tones. That means it’s difficult for us to discern if a bass sound is coming from the left, right, or from behind us. Now, this applies only to the deep bass sounds. If both of our ears function correctly, we have no trouble telling where higher pitched sounds are coming from.
So along comes some smart speaker engineer with a great idea. Put the large bass woofers in a cabinet separate from the other speakers. The small woofer-less speakers are called the satellites. The cabinet containing the woofer is known as the subwoofer (sub or below all the other sounds). And since we can’t localize bass sounds, we only need one subwoofer, instead of two.
All of a sudden we now have a speaker system that not only sounds great, but is also very easy to live with. Again, because we can’t localize bass sounds, the subwoofer can be put just about anywhere in the room: behind furniture, under a table, hidden behind drapery—you name it. The tiny satellite speakers should be placed at ear level in a normal stereo arrangement for optimum performance.
